- When a student is absent from school a written excuse from the doctor or note from the parent/guardian stating the student's name, date(s) of absence, parent signature with phone number(s) and reason must be turned in to the Attendance Office within five (5) days of absence. Parent notes do not excuse the absence but merely inform the attendance office that the parent is aware of the student's absence. Please contact the Attendance Office if an absence is or will be for an extended duration. Consult the Student handbook for more specific information.
- When a student needs to leave during the day, parents are asked to provide a written note. Students should bring the note to the Attendance Office at the beginning of the day. Please include check out time and reason for leaving. All students, regardless of age, must have parent or guardian permission to leave campus and must sign out through the Attendance Office. Should a student need to leave during the day without a written note, they will be "all-called" only between classes in order to minimize class interruptions. Please avoid making appointments that interfere with instructional time.
- All students arriving late must sign in at the Attendance Office before going to class. according to School Board Policy if a student misses ten percent (10%) or more of class time, anytime during the class period, it is considered an absent.
- Special Situations that may require an absence from school are handled as follows:
- Religious Holidays
Students shall be excused from tests, quizzes, and assignments for observance of a religious holiday or because the tenets of his/her religion forbid secular activity at any such time. A letter must be on file in Attendance five (5) days in advance. This will not be counted for credit denial.
- College Visits and Military Physicals
Juniors and Seniors are allowed two (2) days per year for college visits. In addition, students entering the military and who must take a physical exam are allowed to claim this day as a college visit. A letter must be on file in the Attendance Office five (5) days in advance, and official documentation on letterhead must be presented from the institution visited the day of return. This will not be counted for credit denial.
- Court Appearance
A subpoena should be presented to the Attendance Office prior to the court appearance with follow up documentation from the court upon return. This will not be counted for credit denial.
- Bereavement
In the event of the death of a family member, please provide a copy of the obituary, a prayer card, a copy of the death certificate, or a letter from the funeral home along with a note from the parent/guardian within five (5) days of returning to school. This will not be counted for credit denial.
- Credit Denial
SCPS and Lake Mary High School Attendance Policy imposes credit denial for excessive absences. "Excessive absences" is defined as more than nine (9) absences during a semester. Chronic illnesses or other medical conditions may be documented through our school nurse. A renewed copy must be on file in the Attendance Office annually. Please not that absences are per period.
- Clinic
The Clinic is to be used for non-routine situations. When a student is sent to the clinic by the teacher, he/she will be able to notify the parent or will be sent back to class. If your child is ill, please evaluate before sending to school.
